What is Cervical cancer?
It is a cancer that occurs in woman's cervix (birth canal). It is linked to the infection caused by Human Papilloma Virus (papillomaviridae family). There are many types of these virus out of which more than 30 infection the genital tract in females (Ref.PubMed).
Causes of Cervical Cancer (Ref. Indian Cancer Society)
•HPV infection
•Early Marriage
•Multiple sexual partners
•Poor genital hygiene
•Smoking
•Multiple pregnancies
•Weakenend Immune system
•Malnutrition
•Prolonged use of oral contraceptive pillsSymptoms:
Pelvic pain
Back pain
Fatigue
Leaking of urine or faeces from vagina
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Foul smell vaginal discharge
Weight loss

When can it be diagnosed?
In normal population, it is usually seen at the age of 30-45 years. It should be checked in women those who are sexually active for 3 years.

Screening criteria
VIA( Visual inspection with acetic acid)
Once this test comes out to be positive, then Carcinoma cervix screening is done by PAP smear, HPV-DNA screening Test.

Life cycle of HPV
It is inactive outside it's host(human body).But once it enters the body, it amplifies and translocate itself to attain it's virulence.
Prevention of Cervical Cancer
There are vaccines available for the prevention of this deadly disease which can only be administered by the females before being sexually active. It can be taken after being intimately involved, but efficacy is reduced many folds.

Gardasil
Cervarix
These vaccines counter the different strains of Human Papilloma Virus.
