Summer Allergies

 Hey! Its summer again, so I suppose some of you might have welcomed your seasonal allergies still wondering why this happens in this month of the year only, What could be the pattern?

So, just stop thinking too much, its just the season or can be said it in a way, that some people are themselves sensitive towards certain allergens prevailing in our environment at this time of the season.


One major allergy that is being experienced is Allergic Rhinitis also known as Hay Fever.

Causes:-

  • Dust
  • Animal dander
  • Pollen grains
  • Specific plants
  • It is usually airborne
Signs and symptoms :-
  • runny or stuffy nose,  
  • sneezing
  •  red, itchy, and watery eyes
  • swelling around the eyes
  • middle ear effusion
Allergy caused specially due to pollens or other products by plants is specifically called Hay Fever.

Atopic Triad- Combination of three conditions i.e. eczema (dryness of skin), asthma and allergy.

Diagnosis:- There are certain tests available to check one's sensitivity so that the allergens can be avoided:
  • Patch test
  • Blood test (DLC)
  • RAST blood test

Classification

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever): Caused by seasonal peaks in the airborne load of pollens.
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis (nonseasonal allergic rhinitisatopic rhinitis): Caused by allergens present throughout the year (e.g., dander).

Prevention:-
  • Avoiding the allergens affecting individuals
  • Not having pets
  • Clean surroundings
  • Keeping the home dry
  • Not having carpets
  • Avoid smoking around sensitive persons
Treatment:-

  • Intranasal corticosteroids
  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants
  • Following protocols of prevention
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Cromolyn
  • Using N95 Mask
  • Keeping your beddings clean 
  • Keep them under sunlight

# These drugs include levocetirizine, montelukast, fexofenadine, clarinex and over the counter antihistaminic nasal sprays.
