SUPERBUG- term heard, but not understood completely

                                                            SUPERBUG

These are the microbial strains that have become resistant to the drugs used to treat them.

Nowadays, as per the availability of internet and several medical terms and chemical names used commonly has somehow made common man aware of certain drugs which were not easily available or known.

Examples of Superbug:- (Ref. PubMed)

MRSA- Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus- these bacteria don't respond to methicillin and related antibiotics.

Acinetobacter baumannii- resistant to carbapenem

Pseudomonas aeruginosa- resistant to carbapenem

Enterobacteriaceae- resistant to carbapenem

Neisseria gonorrhoeae- Cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone resistant

Enterococcus faecium- vancomycin resistant

Non-typhoidal salmonella- Fluoroquinolones resistant

Helicobacter pylori- Clarithromycin resistant

Campylobacter species- Fluoroquinolones resistant

and many more...

From the above mentioned list, it can be clearly inferred that there are plenty of bacteria which have become resistant to their earlier effective antibiotics.

This has created actual havoc in the medical world, therefore forcing the patients to undergo several diagnostic tests, cultural sensitivity tests etc.

Positive applications of Superbug:

It is used to treat oil spills as a measure to control oil pollution (developed by Anand Chakrabarty et al. in 1979).

It was used in the Texas state, where mass culture of superbug is sprinkled over paddy straw and straw is dried in shade.

To treat oil spill, the straw is spread over the oil slicks and is left as such for a week or more.

During this time, the straw soak up the oil and the bacteria living on it break the oil into non-polluting materials, hence making the oil waste harmless.

During late 20th century, when this superbug was created using biotechnology, it was used for therapeutic as well as for the benefit f the environment.

But presently, due to lack of knowledge among common people, our negligence towards our health and day-to-day problems, we have stopped consulting the experts and taking medicines recklessly. It has eventually deteriorated our health.

So, people please be aware of what are you eating and consuming.
