 THROMBOSIS WITH THROMBOCYTOPENIA SYNDROME

If you read the papers every day, you are probably aware of the most recent panic in the medical community around the AstraZeneca vaccination, which has caused a rare side effect known as TTS (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome).

However, you must comprehend these two concepts independently in order to comprehend this syndrome.


Thrombosis is a condition when a clot forms in the blood vessels, obstructing the arteries and veins and causing minimal or nonexistent blood flow.

Syndrome of thrombocytopenia:- The condition known as thrombocytopenia is characterized by decreased blood platelet counts. Blood cell fragments called platelets are crucial for promoting blood clotting.

Blood clots (thrombosis) and low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), which are required for blood clotting, are the hallmarks of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS).

Signs and Symptoms:-

Symptoms of TTS may include 

  • Severe or persistent headaches 
  • blurred vision
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Leg swelling
  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Easy bruising or tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the injection site

#Those clots typically occur in individuals who are bedridden, hospitalized, or have other medical issues related to inflammation, infection, or cancer.


Diagnostic methods:-

  • CBC with platelet count and peripheral smear
  • Imaging for thrombosis based on signs/symptoms
  • PF4-ELISA (HIT assay); draw blood prior to any therapies
  • Fibrinogen and D-dimer


Treatment:-
  • Initiation of anticoagulation
  • Non-heparin anticoagulation
  • Corticosteroids
  • Plasma exchange therapy
